What Is a Healthcare SIC Code?

SIC stands for Standard Industrial Classification, a system the U.S. government created in the 1930s to group businesses by their primary activity, so economic data could be compared across surveys and over time. It was last fully revised in 1987.

SIC codes are hierarchical: two digits identify a major group, three an industry group and four a specific industry. Healthcare service establishments, such as physician offices, hospitals, nursing facilities and laboratories, fall under Major Group 80, Health Services. Businesses that manufacture, sell or insure rather than deliver care sit in other major groups.

Each establishment gets one code based on its primary business activity, the service that generates the most revenue or employs the most people. That is why a physician practice, a skilled nursing facility and a clinical laboratory carry different codes, even though all three serve patients.

How to Find the Right Healthcare SIC Code

Most classification errors come from coding the services a business mentions instead of the service it is built around. These five steps keep the focus on primary activity.

01

Identify the primary activity

Decide what the organization mainly does, based on revenue or staff time, not its full service menu.

02

Search the lookup

Enter the business type or a keyword in the Healthcare SIC Code Lookup.

03

Review the definition

Open the result details and check what the classification includes.

04

Compare related codes

Check neighboring codes, such as 8062 vs 8069, before settling on one.

05

Select the best fit

Choose the code that best represents the primary activity and note the NAICS equivalent too.

Healthcare SIC Code vs NAICS Code

SIC is the older industry classification system. NAICS (the North American Industry Classification System) replaced it for U.S. federal statistics in 1997 and is shared with Canada and Mexico. SIC still matters because many legacy databases, commercial business datasets, SEC filings and CRM systems continue to carry SIC codes, while NAICS is the standard in modern government and business classification.

Healthcare SIC to NAICS Crosswalk

This healthcare SIC to NAICS mapping is based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s 1987 SIC to NAICS concordance, shown with 2022 NAICS titles. Nine of the 19 healthcare SIC codes map to a single NAICS industry. The other ten split across two or more NAICS codes, so the right NAICS code depends on what the business actually does.

How Healthcare SIC Codes Help With B2B Lead Generation

A SIC code tells you what kind of healthcare organization you are looking at. Combined with a few other filters, it turns a broad market into a list your team can work.

SIC + Geography

Match your territories

Filter SIC 8082 home health care agencies by state, metro area or ZIP code to line up with sales regions or service areas.

SIC + Company size

Focus on accounts that fit

Use employee count or bed size to separate large health systems from community facilities within SIC 8062 hospitals.

SIC + Business type

Separate similar segments

Combine SIC 8011 with specialty or practice type to reach, for example, cardiology groups rather than every physician office.

SIC + Job title

Reach the decision-maker

Pair SIC 8071 medical laboratories with titles such as laboratory director, or SIC 8021 dental offices with practice owners.

Who Can Use Healthcare SIC Codes?

Frequently Asked Questions About Healthcare SIC Codes

There is no single code. Healthcare service establishments are primarily classified under SIC Major Group 80, Health Services, which contains nine industry groups (801 to 809) and 19 four-digit codes, from 8011 to 8099. Healthcare-related businesses such as drug manufacturers, medical device makers, pharmacies and health insurers are classified in other major groups. The right code depends on the organization’s primary activity.

SIC 80 is Major Group 80, Health Services. It covers establishments primarily engaged in furnishing medical, surgical and other health services to persons, including physician and dental offices, nursing facilities, hospitals, medical and dental laboratories, home health care and other outpatient services.

Offices and clinics of medical doctors (M.D.) use SIC 8011. Offices of doctors of osteopathy (D.O.) have their own code, SIC 8031. In NAICS, both fall under 621111, or 621112 for mental health specialists.

Dental offices and clinics, including general and specialized dentistry and dental surgery practices, use SIC 8021. Dental laboratories that make dentures and appliances for dentists are classified separately under SIC 8072.

Hospitals are in SIC industry group 806. General medical and surgical hospitals use 8062, psychiatric hospitals use 8063, and specialty hospitals other than psychiatric (such as children’s, cancer or rehabilitation hospitals) use 8069.

SIC 8011 is Offices and Clinics of Doctors of Medicine: offices and clinics of licensed M.D. physicians practicing general or specialized medicine and surgery, including group practices. Its main NAICS equivalent is 621111, with parts mapping to 621112, 621491 and 621493.

SIC 8062 is General Medical and Surgical Hospitals: hospitals that provide general medical and surgical services, with inpatient care and an organized medical staff. Its NAICS equivalent is 622110, General Medical and Surgical Hospitals.

Medical laboratories that provide analytic or diagnostic services, such as clinical testing and diagnostic imaging, use SIC 8071. Dental laboratories use SIC 8072.

Home health care services, meaning skilled nursing or medical care provided in the home under the supervision of a physician, use SIC 8082. The NAICS equivalent is 621610, Home Health Care Services.

SIC is the older U.S. industry classification system, last revised in 1987, and uses 4-digit codes. NAICS replaced it for U.S. federal statistics starting in 1997, uses up to 6-digit codes, and is revised every five years. Many commercial and legacy business databases still carry SIC codes, and some SIC codes map to more than one NAICS code.

Nursing homes fall under SIC industry group 805, Nursing and Personal Care Facilities. SIC 8051 covers skilled nursing care facilities, SIC 8052 covers intermediate care facilities and SIC 8059 covers other nursing and personal care facilities. Residential care homes that do not provide health care are classified separately under SIC 8361.

Offices and clinics of chiropractors are classified under SIC 8041, part of industry group 804, Offices and Clinics of Other Health Practitioners. The closest NAICS match is 621310, Offices of Chiropractors.

Offices and clinics of optometrists are classified under SIC 8042. The NAICS equivalent is 621320, Offices of Optometrists. Retail optical stores that mainly sell eyewear are classified in retail trade (SIC 5995), not in Major Group 80.

SIC 8049 is Offices and Clinics of Health Practitioners, Not Elsewhere Classified. It covers licensed practitioners who are not physicians, dentists, osteopaths, chiropractors, optometrists or podiatrists, such as physical and occupational therapists, psychologists, audiologists, speech therapists, dietitians and registered nurses in independent practice.

It depends on the setting. Psychiatric hospitals are classified under SIC 8063. Outpatient mental health and substance abuse clinics usually fall under SIC 8093, Specialty Outpatient Facilities, NEC. Psychiatrists in private practice are classified under SIC 8011, and psychologists under SIC 8049.

Kidney dialysis centers are classified under SIC 8092. The matching NAICS code is 621492, Kidney Dialysis Centers.

Retail pharmacies and drug stores are classified under SIC 5912, Drug Stores and Proprietary Stores, in Major Group 59 (Miscellaneous Retail). Because they sell products rather than deliver health services, they are not part of Major Group 80 and do not appear in the lookup above. The NAICS equivalent is 456110, Pharmacies and Drug Retailers.

NEC stands for Not Elsewhere Classified. It marks a catch-all code for establishments that belong to an industry group but do not match any of its more specific codes. Healthcare examples include SIC 8049 (health practitioners), SIC 8059 (nursing and personal care), SIC 8093 (specialty outpatient facilities) and SIC 8099 (health and allied services).

Yes. U.S. federal statistical agencies began replacing SIC with NAICS in 1997, but SIC codes are still widely used. The SEC assigns SIC codes to companies that file on EDGAR, and many business databases, lenders, insurers and B2B data providers still classify companies by SIC. That is why many teams keep both codes in their records.

For a public company, check the SIC code shown on its SEC EDGAR filings. For other organizations, identify the primary business activity and match it in the lookup above, then confirm with sources such as state business registrations or a business data provider. Each establishment has one primary SIC code, although some data providers also list secondary codes.
